Ms. Smith, an ONU alumnus, was also presented with an honorary doctorate degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarey Smith is renowned for her technology-driven engineering and leadership accomplishments,\u201d said Ohio Northern University President Daniel DiBiasio. \u201cShe continues to make significant contributions to her professional field and add great value to the businesses she leads and the customers she serves. We are definitely excited to have our current graduates hear from and be inspired by a past graduate of Carey\u2019s caliber.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Smith\u2019s commencement message connected the university\u2019s motto \u201cEx diversitate vires\u201d (\u201cFrom diversity\u2026strength\u201d) as a foundation for success\u2014both personally and professionally\u2014with the importance of exploring the unfamiliar to create the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA truly diverse view of the world doesn\u2019t show up and ring the doorbell or arrive by text. You need to go find it, in your own way, on your own terms, in your own time,\u201d said Smith in her address. \u201cExplore, search, and discover, and be willing to go into unfamiliar areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Smith graduated from ONU in 1985 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering followed by a master\u2019s degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University.
