The award, presented during the ITS America 2018 Annual Meeting in Detroit, honored Michigan\u2019s first Active Traffic Management system that provides additional capacity during peak-use hours.<\/p>\n<p>The Flex Route system is a lane control system that uses cameras and electronic message boards to open the expressway\u2019s inside shoulder for use during\u00a0peak travel periods. As a subconsultant, we customized and deployed Intelligent NETworks\u00ae (iNET), our proprietary smart cities platform that incorporates technologies that provide information to enable drivers to make actionable decisions. We implemented system enhancements to support desired functionality for the US-23 Corridor in Washtenaw and Livingston Counties, including lane control, hard shoulder running, variable speed limits, and integration with the system\u2019s event management subsystem.<\/p>\n<p>The Flex Route system is expected to ease peak-hour congestion and increase safety along the corridor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Michigan US-23 Flex Route project recently won the Best of ITS Award under the Transportation System Operations category.
