{"id":7201,"date":"2019-04-02T10:13:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T17:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/origin-www.parsons.com\/?p=7201"},"modified":"2019-04-02T10:13:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T17:13:39","slug":"parsons-and-kiewit-all-woman-team-builds-footbridge-to-connect-rwandan-community-with-essential-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.parsons.com\/2019\/04\/parsons-and-kiewit-all-woman-team-builds-footbridge-to-connect-rwandan-community-with-essential-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Parsons and Kiewit All-Woman Team Builds Footbridge to Connect Rwandan Community with Essential Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7202\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Rukarakara_complete_555x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"484\" \/><\/p>\n<p>CENTREVILLE, VA (April 2, 2019) \u2013 Parsons and Kiewit, in partnership with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), recently sent a team of 10 women to Rukarakara, Rwanda\u2014a community of 6,000 people approximately 112 kilometers southwest of the capital city of Kigali\u2014to build a 58-meter suspended footbridge over the Mudasomwa River.<\/p>\n<p>The Parsons and Kiewit multinational team worked on site from March 16 &#8211; 31 to construct the footbridge, which now connects the community with year-round access to schools, government and medical services, and markets\u2014all of which were unreachable during the village\u2019s six- to nine-month annual rainy season. The team included project managers, construction experts, engineers, and safety specialists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeading our all-woman team in Rwanda was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life,\u201d said Jean Excell, Parsons Construction Project Director and Project Manager of the build. \u201cHelping this rural, isolated community in Rwanda\u2014a country that has risen from the aftermath of a civil war, largely due to Rwandan women who are the majority of survivors\u2014was both empowering and humbling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so rewarding to see the immediate impact made by the construction of a footbridge in Rukarakara,\u201d said Amber Harley, Kiewit Assistant Design Engineering Manager and Construction Manager for the project. \u201cSeeing the joy on children\u2019s faces because they can attend school or the look of relief on a mother\u2019s face because her sick baby can receive medical care was incomparable and worth every moment of our team\u2019s hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rukarakara footbridge marks Parsons\u2019 fourth B2P bridge-building project and Kiewit\u2019s eighth B2P project. Both corporations have provided design engineering services, construction support, and support for training programs.
