Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals widely used in the consumer product stream since the 1950s, and PFAS molecules are very persistent and difficult to address in natural media. As a result, PFAS are contaminants of concern globally, appearing on tens of thousands of sites and effecting all industries. Currently, there are no widely available remedial technologies that have been demonstrated to destroy PFAS in-situ, and destructive ex-situ options are limited to high-cost solutions oriented toward high-concentration waste streams.<\/p>\n
We developed an innovative patent-pending means to destroy PFAS in soil and groundwater in in-situ and ex-situ settings by combining a small temperature rise, a metals-based catalyst, and off-the-shelf oxidant products. This methodology has been demonstrated to degrade PFAS to non-toxic end products (fluoride, salts, and carbon dioxide). Parsons developed this technology through several years of laboratory work, two years of field pilots, and approximately 34 individual lab and field trials.<\/p>\n
Hot In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (Hot ISCO) achieved PFAS destruction efficiencies in the laboratory of greater than 99.9% within method detection limits, and greater than 90% destruction efficiency during large-volume mixed matrix ex-situ field trials. Laboratory and field ex-situ demonstrations across a wide variety betmgm live casinoof groundwater and soil conditions, PFAS mixes, and co-contaminants have yielded a tremendous collection of lessons learned and a much deeper understanding of PFAS destruction mechanisms.<\/p>\n
